I’m grateful I was able to be there when my last old cat had to go. He’d been in so much pain and had been stoic about it, as cats are. I only really understood how bad it had been for him when the pain-relief part of the shot kicked in and my normally quiet cat whirred loudly and purred just before he went. Oh, shit. Crying again.

I didn’t initially cry until I thought of my dog who we put down last may…

I don’t know how you could leave your pet in the last moments of their lives :’( Yes, it’s hard to see them die, but at least they’re not alone with strangers.  We had to put my cat to sleep when I was about 16, we had her since before I was born. I just pet her the whole time and looked in her eyes as they did it so she would know I was there and everything was ok. One of the worst things I’ve had to go through, but I was glad I could comfort her :(

I too wouldn’t think twice about being there as they are passing. Its never easy. It always breaks my heart. But it just seems… important. As far as I’m concerned, you made them a promise to take care of them and love them for their entire life. They were always there for you when you needed it. You need to be there for them.
