These manipulations are intentional. Just as a bunch of painters went from strict representational work to idealizing their subjects, that's what these photographers are doing.

I've done a bit of freelance touch-ups and for a $3 an image wage, I put 100% into making sure everything stays as perfect as I can make it. A basic web search gives me a rough estimate of the salary of an average digital photo retouch-er, at $64,000. I imagine working for Vogue means a much higher salary than this.  My point is, why the hell is that guys torso missing?! You get paid so much fucking money and can't keep a torso in the shot?!
