Ai Weiwei’s Studio Pets Get Their Moment in the Spotlight
The many cats and dogs that live in and around Ai Weiwei’s studio make very frequent appearances in Alison Klayman’s new documentary, “Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry.”
Early on Ai notes that one of his cats knows how to open doors, commenting that unlike humans, felines never close the doors behind them. An eloquent metaphor for the artist’s practice of opening doors that Chinese authorities would much rather keep closed, Klayman takes up Ai’s analogy with ample footage of the countless cats roaming his Beijing home and studio.
