Maybe if factory farming’s cruelty wasn’t so extreme, there wouldn’t be a vegetarian movement. If all the meat-eaters agreed to have more humane ways of raising and slaughtering animals, maybe there wouldn’t be debates with us high-n-mighty vegetarians.

this made me cry. when i was younger we had some pigs and they were very sweet, very smart animals. i love pigs. this is so wrong.

Not naturally raising and humanely harvesting animals humanly? No good can come of this. For years now, I have refused to eat meat unless I know the animal was naturally raised and humanely harvested. Don’t want too much karmic blood on my hands, ya know?

Was there not a more humane way these pigs could have been killed, if they indeed had hoof and mouth (or it was trying to be prevented)? They are actually intelligent animals. This video actually made me cry- so upsetting!

Where are the people “outraged” when the Orkin/Terminix/Clark are called and exterminate “pests” like ants, termites, and other insects? Hmmmm? Aren’t they animals too? (Yes they are; Kingdom Animalia) Oh I c only “certain” animals are worthy of your outrage. I guess people starving also doesn’t get your ire up. Or worse people eating diseased meat and dying. There are a lot more of “us” now than there used to be. The best thing you can do is NOT TO HAVE KIDS! Everyone! Period! In 50 years, two kids per family max, “to replace” themselves. Petitions don’t help anyone except to feel better and like you “did” something.

I don’t understand all the people saying that this is what HAS to be done for human safety and that this is excusable because of the other farming methods. There is a lot of cruelty in farming all over the world but things like THIS should never happen. I live in the UK, have a farm and were lucky to survive the Foot & Mouth outbreak several years ago that devastated farms all over the country. Our neighbouring farms suffered and I know peoples livestock that were slaughtered and it DIDN’T happen this way. How can you say that suffocating is a painless death? They would not have suffocated instantly. They were more likely crushed and gravely injured before suffocating. Can you not hear the noise they are making? That is not just the noise of the ‘pigs on top’ Just because systems are cruel in other areas does not mean it’s then ok to allow the animals to suffer elsewhere.

I’m thinking that there are human safety factors keeping them from shooting, pithing, or lethally injecting the animals. But once you dug your giant pit, covering it with a tarp filling it with any one of a number of heavier-than-air gases would have allowed the critters to die painlessly of suffocation without requiring any human contact. Since it’s the carbon dioxide that causes the physical sensation of suffocation, the pigs would have still been banged around from the mechanical herding down the shoot, but their deaths would have been quick and painless 2-3 minutes thereafter.

Those of you apathetic towards animals…you might want to read Slaughterhouse by Gail Eisnitz. The people slaughtering those animals…they become pyschopaths.

Looks like a lot of bio-hazard suits to me. Even worn by some of those near the filming; I assume they are activists of some sort. The truth of the matter is… people would have found a reason to cry about this no matter how they were killed, even if each one received an individual funeral.  This looks straight forward to me, bio-hazard suits and this method of “disposing” of the animals… A rush decision to deal with something serious. They may not even have a full grasp of the scope of their problem and felt the need for an immediate, quick answer. Like it or not… the welfare of humans comes before animals. Personalize it, are you going to keep the cat/dog around if there is strong potential it could harm, kill, or make deathly ill your child?
