‘Jump in front of trains all day…’ seems to be a weird exhortation in an otherwise not-too-brilliant feel-good fist pumper like ‘Amy.’ Or maybe it’s just the timing. This guy’s not really considered to be even among the top handful of active songwriters, is he? ‘People might laugh at your tattoos. When they do, get new ones in completely garish hues.’ It’s cute, but it’s not particularly poetic, or even very good. West Texas is his best work, IMHO, but based on his catalog and especially recent stuff this guy’s in no shape to be named essentially the Greatest Poet in the Land. Of course, now I’m going to delve into opinionated music preferences… but Sam Beam, Will Johnson, Bill Callahan, and John K. Samson (a Canadian!) are all better LYRICISTS, though probably none should be seriously talked about as a Poet Laureate. Unfortunately, neither should anyone in the (venerable) Merge Records canon, I don’t think. Superchunk for PL, maybe?
