All The Ways "Frozen" Is Not "The Snow Queen"

The new Disney release is "loosely" based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, but what changes were made, and how loose is "loosely"?

As a lover of fairy tales and a writer of fairy tale retellings myself (my book "Shadowskin" was just released through Amazon in October), I am always very interested when Disney decides to interpret another fairy tale. BuzzFeed has shared content before about how Disney has made changes to classic fairy tales, but this isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes the changes have made for wonderful movies. So, what changes were made to Andersen's fairy tale? Were the changes for the better? Let's find out.

    1. Main Character

    2. The Snow Queen

    3. The Plot

    4. Supporting Cast

    5. The Ending (Spoilers!)

    In Conclusion

When Disney says that "Frozen" is 'loosely' based off of "The Snow Queen," it's clear that this phrase means "it was our starting point." Though it does have some things in common with the original tale--a frozen heart, sibling love, a queen with snowy qualities, and a reindeer--it is an entirely different story. So don't go into the theater expecting a faithful adaptation of Andersen's original story. "Frozen" has its merits and its problems, too. Would a straight up adaptation of "The Snow Queen" made an excellent movie with Disney's 3D animation expertise? Absolutely. However, such a film would not have fit Disney's algorithms closely enough. Thankfully, "Frozen" is visually stunning and the voice-acting is great. It's definitely a film to see and children will love it.
