10 Things Only Illustration Majors Will Understand

Because art majors work just as hard as 'regular students'.

1. How do they DO that??

Every art student knows the feeling of inadequacy that accompanies watching an older or simply more talented peer do in minutes what would take them hours.

2. But I don't WANT to draw that right now!!

It's your brain and your own creative talent working against you. You have a massive oil painting in chiaruscuro due tomorrow of the madonna and child, it's 75% finished...and all you can bring yourself to draw is chibis from an anime you watched once 5 years ago and recently rediscovered.

3. ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW???

There's always that one assignment where you feel like you've outdone yourself...and your professor tears you apart. OR those times you come in with a half assed piece of shit you crapped out high off Red Bull at 2 in the morning people laud as your 'creative turning point' and the 'highlight of your academic work'. REALLY? REALLY NOW?

4. Deadline Overload AKA: No One Cares you might have a life outside of school

Every time your 'real school' friends have midterms or finals...you have 8-10 projects due in one week. Needless to say they can probably write their papers in a few hours, which is all fine and dandy, but most serious illustrative work takes DAYS of focused concentrated LABOR to complete to anyone's satisfaction, especially at college level. Throw that in the faces of anyone who tells you you have it easy.

5. This. is. MY PROJECT. BACK OFF.

The inevitable feeling during gentle debates with a professor over what you should do for your project. They always love the idea you HATE.

6. When your professors give you constructive criticism

7. When your friends give you constructive criticism

GTFO

8. Thinking outside the box is for the delightfully stupid and naive

Anytime you try and do something totally different and unique, it backfires on you during the actual execution stage. It's really better to stick with variations on what you already know works.

9. Going months without seeing your friends might worry most people...

It's actually kind of annoying and distracting when they decide to 'kidnap' you in the middle of a heavy work session and take you out for beers just because they missed your face and need their OWN reasons to flake off and procrastinate.

10. Critique...or ego stroking convention?

2 hours of mutual ass kissing for 5 minutes of actual constructive commentary on your own piece. Sooo many hours of life wasted...

So yeah, we put up with just as much crap as any other college major does. We work just as hard, and get just as frustrated. But at the end of the day, we're probably more satisfied, because we chose this major based solely on our love for art and creating it. <3
