In this video, U.S. Representative Bill Young (R-FL) responds to a question about raising the minimum wage with “get a job.”
CONSTITUENT: Hi, I’m (inaudible) how are you? Happy Fourth of July. Jesse Jackson, Jr. is passing a bill around to increase the minimum wage to 10 bucks and hour. Do you support that?
YOUNG: Probably not.
CONSTITUENT: 10 bucks, that would give us a living wage.
YOUNG: How about getting a job?
CONSTITUENT: I do have one.
YOUNG: Well, then why do you want that benefit? Get a job.

Thanks for just assuming that I’m unemployed because I’m protesting, though, I really appreciate being thoughtlessly stereotyped like that.” “I’ve been looking for work for a month and I haven’t a single thing. You know, there are more people seeking employment than they’re are job openings.” “I have a job, but I still can barely afford to eat and I don’t have any health insurance.” “I can’t get a job, which is, y’know, kinda the reason for this protest?” “Actually, over 80% of us ARE employed.” Idiot: “Yeah, well, uh, socialism destroys jobs, and capitalism creates them, which you’re trying to destroy. And if you work for the government, go get a REAL job! Also, if you really wanted a job, you’d be able to find one. So go get a job, you losers.”

Giovanni Lido 10 months agoWalter Williams calling it - two decades ago.
If you’ve got a shop and can afford to hire two people at $7 an hour, but you’re legally not allowed to pay less than $10, what will you have? Instead of two unskilled-but-employed-and-learning newcomers to the job-market, you’ve got one new worker getting experience and one unemployed person wasting his time.
Good intentions do not necessarily produce good policy. -

Every time they raise the minimum wage, they make it harder for low-skilled workers to find a job. (Or does anyone think employers don’t respond to price controls by changing their hiring practices?)

It cracked me up that he repeated “get a job” when this man already has one. Most people who DO have a job are barely or not getting by on minimum wage. You can’t ignore that. Must be nice being filthy rich like him, though -___-

plemur 10 months ago“Well, then why do you want that benefit?” says so much about his (and likely others of his caucus) mindset. If something does not directly benefit them, they see no reason why it should be supported. The greater good and economic realities have no bearing on their opinions—it’s all about either the lowest common denominator emotional issues or coddling those who either give their campaigns money or will put them on a company board for their own profit. It must be such a shallow and hateful mind to view the world through.

I’m just going to start yelling, “Get a job!” at things whenever they make me feel uncomfortable. It may make me sound ridiculous when I’m screaming it at my Siamese as I clean cat puke off the floor but if it works for the congressman …
