Anyone else find it disturbing that no one can agree how many countries there are in the world?. in 2010? REALLY?

well screwed that post up… anyway, after reading that post I did some very brief reserch and was pretty amazed to find that:  England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland do not count as individual countries (in that 192-195), and instead all fit under the single United Kingdom banner. Also Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Greenland, Palestine and Taiwan dont count. Guess it depends on the generally percieved definition of what a country is. http://geography.about.com/cs/countries/a/numbercountries.htm

The 192-195 range is based on U.N. standards for recognizing states. Some politicians and scholars on the left believe that more areas claiming to be a sovereign should be recognized as such. 220 isn't a completely arbitrary number. The C.I.A. used to acknowledge the existence of 220 world entities. The Factbook site claims that there are 266 at the moment. They're not explicitly called countries, but these are where the numbers are coming from. ANYWAY, I'm not saying that Verizon isn't trying to make itself look better by using the higher counts, but depending on one's point of view, it's not such a weird claim. Wikipedia counts 203 sovereign states using the Montevideo criteria, which seems like a reasonable count to me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries
