True story - When I was a teenager, I was offered a job at an American Apparel store in Manhattan after a girl “scouted” me on the street.
Walked out 3 days later when the manager refused to let me wear a bra with my work outfit, and forced me to work ONLY around the store front windows to - in her words, “draw shoppers in”.
Nope.

It isn’t much different than any company’s standards. I work in hotels, and ours basically are the same. Of course they want you to wear the stuff they’re trying to sell. It makes fiscal sense.

Their clothes are hideous. I could never work at a clothing store because a lot of them like you to wear only their clothes…I don’t restrict my shopping to ONE store haha, my closet is full of a bunch of brands.

they’re not even achieving “hipster” or whatever, they all just look exactly the same. like a blank canvas. with hideous, overpriced, frumpy clothing.

While I totally agree with david bowie’s mullet on the comment, I wouldn’t mind bending her over that chair another way! Oh, and really? If they want their employees to dress like this then I assume they’re only hiring AA shoppers. I wouldn’t work somewhere that I would half to spend half my paycheck simply to stay in dress code. Also— their fashion sense = outdated. It’s one thing to ask your employees to look fashionable it’s another to make them look like douchebags/ people with no current fashion sense. (IE ms. sleeveless lawn button up has on HIDEOUS shoes and WHO other than anyone below the age of 15 would wear a hairbow that way?)

I see no problem with this - its retail specific for the store to promote the clothing style and look they want to push. As for the hygiene issue - sadly I’ve had a couple employees that had ‘issues’ with this in the past. Its amazed me how folks today can be so damn lazy, a shower only takes 5 minutes.

I’m not saying that I agree with the code, especially not with the recent allegations of racism, but this code is normal. Anyone who has worked in retail of clothes, especially high-end or “trendy” stores will tell you that the dress codes are very strict. I can tell you that at J. Crew the dress code is much stricter.

I wouldn’t be able to afford to work there. I would have to buy an entirely new wardrobe, despite the fact that I generally dress to their aesthetic, just because my clothes wouldn’t be the right brands.

i’ve worked retail before and i can tell you from experience every place has its dress code but, at least where i worked, it’s not heavily enforced; it’s more like guidelines…unless you’re way off then they let you know. and the pricier the store i worked the more “strict” they were about it. so figures an overpriced store like AA would be anal about it.

I am OUTRAGED that their dress code wasn’t all “Hey new employee: Wear whatever you want, it’s okay by us. If you want to wear our clothes, remember to accessorize with things that aren’t very cool, because that will help us sell clothes. Oh yeah, and if you want to not bathe or have ratty hair, that’s cool, too. It’s not like seeing our clothes on attractive, well-groomed, fashionable people will convince customers that purchasing the same clothes will make them look attractive, well-groomed and fashionable. Do whatever you want. Seriously.” OUTRAGED

I honestly don’t see the problem with that. They have high standards for their employees. I applied to work at PetSmart recently and they had very similar guidelines. If you work in a clothing store, you should dress fashionable.  In fact I really support these guidelines because they encourage women NOT to wear makeup and to wear natural hairstyles.
