My personal favorite comes from one of the earlier episodes:  “I’m jumpier than a virgin at a prison rodeo.” Good times. I also love her story about faking her own death in a riverboat accident to make everyone realize how much they love her after she loses the Miss Magnolia pageant.

OMG—I didn’t realize she’d passed. Reality really sucks sometimes. Golden Girls shouldn’t die. They just shouldn’t. Sigh. Not to be maudlin, but really: The world often seems like such a sad place. The chance to smile and laugh with characters you know and really love for a few minutes a week is no small thing at all. Like a bowl of hot soup on a cold winter evening, it’s something to be deeply grateful for. It’s those simple but deep pleasures, along with family and friends, that make life worth living. Thank you, Ms. McClanahan.
