That doesn't make it not homophobic or offensive. Just replace it with “Jew” or “Asian.” “That movie fuckin sucked.” “I know, it was so fuckin Jew.” —and see how that flies, even with the logic that you “support” Jewish people and have Jewish friends and don't at all mean to literally imply Jewish people themselves, just that, you know, “Jew” also means “fucking stupid” and “lame.” Meaning IS Use, you're right. What you intended doesn't matter. The meaning you created does. When you're a gay guy and people are telling you something's so fuckin gay, “oh, no offense,” it's not a great feeling to know what you're labelled also is a label for shit that people hate.

When a person casually says the word “faggot” or uses “gay” to mean “stupid” I make it clear to them that those terms are offensive. Why? because while they may not be specifically malicious they are a symptom of a heteronormative society that makes gays feel much less human and leads to self-loathing, drug use, and a third of all teen suicides being committed by gay people when they only represent 3 percent of the population. If my gay brothers and sisters hadn't stood up against the brutality they had to face 50 years then I would have to be facing that same level of brutality today. By standing up to clueless idiots today, even if I am booed and hissed and shouted down by all the straight people, maybe I am helping to give future gay people a chance to live in a world where they can feel completely and equally human, where “gay” doesn't have to mean “stupid”. bring on the blaggarts, I can take it.

Preface: I support same-sex marriage, and generally think that people who disapprove of homosexuality are ignorant and self-defeating. But seriously, let's stop throwing around words like “homophobia.” It's almost like you're trying to make it into something comparable to “racism,” and we all know how serious and well-founded accusations of that are now-a-days. When people flippantly use words like “faggot” or “gay” when they mean “stupid” or some other pejorative, they don't consciously seek to insult homosexuals. The great philosopher of language Wittgenstein famously said — and I believe correctly — that Meaning is Use. I don't think there's much argument about what people mean today when they utter some off the cuff remark, pronouncing this or that to be “gay.” While juvenile and unquestionably low-brow, it is not referring to the subject as being homosexual. Indeed most of the things described in this manner are either abstract notions or inanimate objects wholly incapable of possessing any sexual orientation whatsoever. And while these words are still used to often refer to homosexuals in a prejudiced and derogatory manner, the trend is and has been shifting away from this usage. But the point is that a word can mean different things depending on its usage. We may not approve of the use of that language for its otherwise offensive connotations. But at least have the integrity to admit the difference between an immature and slightly learning-impaired yokel and someone who is genuinely “homophobic.”
