The folks at Rinry Game Game test 8 Nintendo cartridges to see how much abuse the 25-year-old NES games can take before they give out. It may come as no surprise to anyone who has ever owned an NES, but 7 of the 8 cartridges survive the testing.

if the cartridges weren't the problem then the NES itself was not very sturdy. it or the games required a lot blowing on(which may not have done squat). the SNES on the other hand seems to be very reliable.

Not too shocked. NES games (and cartridges in general) are physical connections to their respective consoles. Nothing is being read (in the same sense) as modern consoles. As long as the pins are connected, and none of the important electrical components are damaged (ROM chip, connections), it will always work fine.It takes a lot of direct damage to ruin these components. I am a loser.
