Happy Birthday, Super Mario Bros.

It's the 25th birthday of video gaming's most iconic franchise, Super Mario Bros.! Happy birthday, Mario. Here's to another 25 years. (I, for one, look forward to playing new Mario games well into my 50s.)

  • I was actually referring to the Irish pale. So there. Anyway, I see that there's no convincing you, so all I can do is provide my own point of view here.

  • Turtlefeed (if that is your real name), I assumed when you questioned my knowledge on the etymology of the phrase 'beyond the pale' that you were referring to it's implied reference to 18th century Russia and Catherine The Great's 'Pale of Settlement' which separated Jews from Russians, and that by using the phrase in this context, I was relating the Koopa Troopa to repressed Jews, and in turn, Mario and his ilk to Hitler and the Nazis. Hence invoking Godwin's Law. I apologize if I misread your comments, and invoked the law prematurely. However, this doesn't make Bowser and the Koopa Troopas any less evil. I think maybe you've become so indoctrinated by the recent pro-turtle agenda in society that you are failing to recognize the inherent evil embedded deep within every Koopa, and perhaps even in all turtles. You've had the wool pulled over your eyes by Bowser and the Koopas. TIME TO WAKE UP, SHEEPLE! WAKE UP AND SEE THAT MARIO WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG! TURTLES ARE EVIL!

  • Wow, -1000 to Tanner for incorrectly invoking Godwin's law. Try a few centuries earlier.  Also, I'm beginning to think you're in on this conspiracy, Tanner. Don't keep a good turtle down.

  • GODWIN'S LAW! I win. Turtles are evil.

  • Wow, Tanner. I didn't know that you bought into the Nintendo Imperialist Agenda (NIA for the acronym geeks). How do you REALLY know what they say about Bowser is true? How many innocent turtles have died because you've insisted they aren't really turtles? Don't buy into NIA's evil plan, Tanner. Turtles are crying out for justice. See, I think you must not realize what's going on here. I mean, you used the phrase “beyond the pale” as if it were nothing. Do you know the etymology of that? 'Cause I'm sensing a trend. A TREND.

  • Wow, TF. I didn't realize you despised Mario so much. I mean, technically Koopa Troopas aren't turtles though, right? They're the evil minions of Bowser. I understand your love of all things Chelonian, but supporting Bowser's legacy of terror is beyond the pale.

  • Also, prior to his career in Mushroom Land, Mario was at least civil to turtlekind. Today is a dark, dark day for Chelonians. I mean, Americans don't think about Thanksgiving as an anniversary where the Native Americans got screwed over by Europeans, right? Nor do we think about the impact the Mario Bros. made on the Koopa Troopas. From a historical standpoint, idolizing Mario in this way is really problematic for me.

  • Jumpman, shumpman. He was definitely called Mario in SOME Donkey Kong game prior to Super Mario Brothers. I remember playing as Mario in the arcade. Maybe on the Atari as well.

  • I may be wrong, but he is over 200 years old. At first, he was an Italian opera tenor, now his latest reincarnation is an Italian plummer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_(tenor) See?

  • He was in Donkey Kong. Mario the character is definitely older than 25, Tanner. Not that I care, really, since he's a TURTLE MURDERER.
