I'm pretty sure, as the blog post says, that this has been around since Facebook was just at Harvard.

Tech Buzz According to the official Facebook blog, starting today, friends and families of deceased Facebook users can now switch accounts over to “memorialized” profiles. The account is locked and stripped of sensitive information, so people can come and pay their respects. This is both a very noble gesture, and the basis for a number of new Facebook related pranks.

This is stupid but I am totally going to make one that is flippin' hilarious.
If there was a creepy badge, I'd apply it to this post.
Hmmm. I don't know what to make of this. On the one hand I can see how it's a good idea. But on the other, the family of a friend of mine who passed away a few months ago still checks his account, and I know seeing the memories and warm messages people share makes them feel good—so the idea of locking account where it can't be accessed could maybe be reconsidered. Still, that's an interesting and big step/change for a social networking site to make.
