12 Action Responses To The Dunn Verdict

I won't fan fire by recapping the details of the Dunn case. I will, however, remind you that ten days from now, February 26, 2014, marks the two year anniversary of the murder of Trayvon Martin. To date, twenty-six children have died as a result of Stand Your Ground cases in Florida. So, in lieu of our collective and righteous rage, here's a list of possible action responses.

“It is not a Black problem. It is a white problem. This is an American problem. This is a societal problem where people should be outraged when a man is able to instigate an interaction with kids and then shoot them when it doesn’t go well,” he continued. “It should be an outrage for everybody.”

The sooner we call it what it is, the sooner we can get about the business of addressing it.

    2. Cancel All Of Your Plans To Hit South Beach, Miami...

    3. Contact Marion P. Hammer.

Hammer is the president of the NRA. The NRA recently lobbied to expand Florida's 'Stand Your Ground' Law. Contact her IMMEDIATELY; vent your frustrations as often as the spirit moves you.

    4. Liberation Is The Goal.

    5. Honor Your Ancestors.

    6. Download The Stop & Frisk App (or others like it).

"Stop and Frisk Watch" is a free and innovative smart phone application that empowers New Yorkers to monitor police activity and hold the NYPD accountable for unlawful stop-and-frisk encounters and other police misconduct.

The app allows you to record, listen, and report stops. It also has a section that informs you of your rights.

....then discuss at length. It may be the hardest conversation you ever have, but don't you think it's time?

    8. Stop Forgetting.

"I insist that the irrelevance of black life has been drilled into this country since its infancy, and shall not be extricated through the latest innovations in Negro Finishing School. I insist that racism is our heritage, that Thomas Jefferson's genius is no more important than his plundering of the body of Sally Hemmings, that George Washington's abdication is no more significant than his wild pursuit of Oney Judge, that the G.I Bill's accolades are somehow separable from its racist heritage. I will not respect the lie. I insist that racism must be properly understood as an Intelligence, as a sentience, as a default setting which, likely to the end of our days, we shall unerringly return."

    9. Join An Organization.

    10. Withdraw.

    11. Remain Faithful.

"I urge you, ask you, gentle you, to please not spend your spirit dry by bewailing these difficult times. Especially do not lose hope. Most particularly because, the fact is that we were made for these times.

There will always be times when you feel discouraged. I too have felt despair many times in my life, but I do not keep a chair for it. I will not entertain it. It is not allowed to eat from my plate.

Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach."

    12. Keep On Living....

We deserve the full scope of our humanity. If you want a family, and it is within your grasp, have at it. Don't let these dire circumstances minimize your life experiences. Your great-great grandmother made a choice (or might've been forced) to procreate while enslaved. She knew your great grandmother/father would be taken away... beaten... killed... brainwashed.... But she had the baby/babies anyway. And now, you are here. Black love is the premiere revolutionary act. Its a stand for your humanity. Keep on loving. The beauty of us is our will to keep on, keeping on.
