Shatner Vs Limbaugh On Health Care

This is a short clip for “Raw Nerve” hosted by Shatner on the BIO channel. posted In this particular clip, Limbaugh argues that having health care is equivalent as having a house on the beach. I just find it a very fascinating scene.

  • Why is education fundamental but health care isn't? Health care should be fundamental before education because it is a matter of life or death. How can you guys defend letting somebody die from a stray bullet on the foot steps of a hospital because of their lack of insurance? Truly barbaric. It's not just a matter of who has money and who doesn't, it is also a matter of who the insurance companies figure are too big of a risk; take for example, the rape victim that was cut after her doctors decided she should start taking anti-retrovirals. How can you defend that? The fact of the matter is, Americans pay more for health care per capita, and by many measures you have an overall lower quality system than your Canadian neighbours (for example, consider infant mortality rates).

  • “Here's my premise, do you agree with it or not? If you have money you're going to get healthcare. If you don't have money it's more difficult.”
Mr. Shatner, what do you mean by “healthcare?” If you mean health insurance, the answer is no. People who “have money” can choose (for now) whether or not to use their money to purchase insurance. So they won't necessarily “get healthcare.” It is also inaccurate to suggest that “getting healthcare” is more difficult for people who “don't have money.” Because, you see, they can sit on their couch watching Montel and Maury all day and the government will give them health insurance in some form or another. But people who “have money,” have to work for their money, and have to spend that money that they worked for on health insurance if they choose to do so. So it's more difficult, in that sense, for people with money. “Isn't the premise … Isn't this uh uh valid that the healthcare system today is breaking the country?”
Ok, now it's clear that you don't know what words like “premise” or “valid” mean, and you just throw them out there because it sounds intelligent when you hear other people use them. And no, I can assure you that the healthcare system is not “breaking the country,” no matter how much you want to believe what you're being told by hack politicans and the echo-chamber formerly known as the news media. Mr. Shatner: stick to reading Sarah Palin's tweets. They make you sound well-informed by comparison.

  • The point limbaugh is making is that if you want health care, budget for it or for insurance. If you dont want it, buy smokes or anything else you want instead. Just dont ask him to buy your health care later if you chose not to buy it now. Same goes for your food, your housing, or anything else other than public goods like national defense. Sorry guys, but the guy is right.

  • The federal government subsidizes most of those houses on the beach via The National Flood Insurance Program because no sane private insurance company covers them.

  • of course that ridiculous statement would be coming out of the mouth of a rich fat windbag. why should he care if the little guy can afford healthcare (or a house ANYWHERE)???

  • 1) healthcare is not equivalent to how nice of a house you own. one cannot attain the “unalienable rights” of life, liberty, & the pursuit of happiness if they are bankrupted by hospital bills when they become sick , or cannot afford routine healthcare to begin with. 2) rush has no idea what he is talking about. soaring costs have a massive impact on our economy.
