Pray for President Obama…Job 42:12

The bumper sticker says 109:8, NOT 109:9. It’s a bumper sticker reference to a statement in Psalms, not a bible, not a complete analysis of Psalms and the context, nor is it a vision into the mind of the writer. It’s a political bumper sticker, and I think it’s damn relevant considering the current state of our economy and the reckless spending by this President who is doing all the wrong things to get the Country back on track.

Note that the horizon “O” motif in Obama is upside down… that to me seals it. It is a call for his death (like showing a fish floating belly up or a bug with it’s legs in the air).  And as far as the 1-20-09 stickers… that is not the same at all… as 1-20-09 was not an early departure for Bush… it was a full second term. No one was publicly calling for Bush’s death or removal by revolution or coup… unlike some of the nuts on the right this year.

Although I don’t think the bumper sticker is particularly funny, it is obviously employed primarily as a joke. And I cringe pre-emptively at whatever vapid responses this may get spouting some tired crap about racism. Of course there are the fringe nuts who want him dead. But I dare say that there are just as many nuts on the other side who wanted Bush and/or Cheney dead and still do. Bear in mind this anecdotal illustration of the absurdity of the double standard:
During the run-up to the 2008 election, a California homeowner hanged Sarah Palin in effigy. In response, a neighbor hanged Barack Obama in effigy. Hanging Palin was characterized by the media as boldly artistic political speech. Meanwhile, the hanging of Obama in effigy elicited endless hisses of racism and even resulted in the homeowner being questioned by authorities about any plans he might have to attempt an assassination.

It seems farkistan wants to ignore the verse that follows verse 8. Anyone that insists that verse 8 can be taken without verse 9 is basically justifying taking verses out of context, which is a very dangerous thing to do.

I guess people forgot there’s a church praying for the man’s death, and there have already been several asasination plots against him. But nobody really want’s Obama dead. Right.

it is important to consider the motivation of displaying the message, not just how it is interpreted. clearly whoever came up with this idea knew the full implication of the text. for instance one could display a sticker that said “HoH pat robertson DaH” and most people wouldn’t know what it meant. however, the speaker of the message would still be a douchebag for advocating the assassination of pat pobertson in klingon, no matter how it was interpreted.

It seems to me they’re being flippant with their own faith. And how far will the spin go? Will they assert they didn’t know the next verse? “Honestly, I’ve never even read the Bible!”

Tyler C. — it’s the same, how? Hating someone and praying for his death are two very different things. You’re delusional.

I wish the right wing christian conservatives would just curl up and die and go visit Jesus already. That way Jesus can slap them in the face for being hate mongers. The hate is going to consume them all in the end.

honestly, if people don’t understand why the context of the very next verse (or the rest of the friggin’ chapter, for that matter; which is a prayer for death against an evil man who doesn’t car about the poor) is not relevant, they are blinded by their politics.

Wanting the President out of office and using the particular Psalm, which, itself is out of context, as it is written as a prayer by King David about the unjust persecution of himself, is in itself not disturbing. What is problematic is the use of the Psalm, ignoring the next part and in conjunction with other who pray for the death of Obama.
This isn’t about free speech. Nobody is saying don’t say what you want. What they are doing, is practicing THEIR free speech and saying those who think this type of thing is funny, are a bunch of douchebags.

After spending ten years in Catholic School, reading and reporting on The Bible, and being able to actually know what those In-N-Out Burger verses are without looking up I can assure all of you, 90% of what Jesus said boil down to one thing: “Quit your fucking bitching.”

/dislike Hate it when people try to use religion to support/oppose death penalty, war, higher/lower taxes, politicians, etc. Hate it even worse when they use it as an excuse to terrorize, maim, and kill. Support/oppose your policy and politician on the merits of the issue and stop putting words in God’s mouth. Hmmkaythnks.
