Does Peter Parker's Skin Color Matter?
A growing movement has begun to cast Donald Glover as the new Spiderman as the movie franchise gets a reboot. The story would be the same, the character would be the same, except for, obviously, darker skin. Should it matter?

Honestly, I don't care if Peter Parker is black or white, I just want to see Donald Glover get more work and he could fill that role well. Honestly considering how every other film version of the character has been for the past 50 years why not just cut to the chase and use a young nerdy comedian.

Spiderman, along with Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, etc. can be White, Black, Asian or Latino (or whatever, really) as can any fictional character so long as the cultural and hisorical context supports the casting decision. (i.e. casting Will Smith as a Secret Service agent in the late 1860's was a real stretch in “Wild Wild West.”) I would think by now this would be a pretty basic assumption.

Yes, the skin tone does matter! In regards to Nick Fury, the Ultimate version is African American. So, that previous Nick Fury statement makes no damn sense. So, even if the producers of the movie decided to go with the Ultimate version of Spider-Man, he would still be white. Also, in regards to the movies that cast a Caucasian person to play and Asian person, guess what? The skin tones are still the same! However, I do understand that all actors, and people, should be considered equally for the job. But, if he does not get this job as Spider-Man, then how did all the white people feel when they were turned down for the role of Blade? Wesley Snipes is African American, and the film directors/producers probably made the decision to cast him because Blade was based on the comics, which featured an African American person as the main character.

Okay, to the nay sayers….Jake Gyllnhall is the lead of “Prince of Persia”….That old white guy played an asian man on “Kung Fu: the Legend Continues”….why is this an issue? Toby Maguire played Spiderman, and if he can convince the world he is a hero…there is no question that Donald Glover can plus he is hilarious and with this chance can prove himself on the big screen. I love this idea. Screw race, why should it matter?

Who cares? The movie will be even worse than Spidey 3…

There is oil spilling into the ocean right now. Let's all raise alarm and stand up for a new Spiderman! F*ck our priorities are screwed.

You're all well aware that Marvel has spontaneously switched character's ethnicities before, and its worked. I love original Nick Fury, but no one can say that Samuel L. is anything less than amazing. I'm with Donald.

I'm not convinced Glover's the guy (I've only seen him on Community and I'm not impressed), and I suspect Hollywood would be a little too proud of themselves for doing it, but as a life-long Spider-Man superfan I approve. I really hope someone asks Stan Lee and Steve Ditko what they think.

It's a great idea because if there's one thing that comic-book-geeks don't care about it's details.

Upon reviewing the comments I'm impressed: I would never have guessed in a 1000 years that keeping Peter Parker a Caucasian would be the hill where whiny White Male Privilege apologists made their petulant last stand.

seriously the character is a white dude - how about we get a white guy play Martin Luther King or Malcolm X or Shaft. Sheehse political correctness gone wrong. Screw it it's only skin - why not let a women play Spiderman - should it matter. This is retarded.

Hey, you know who is the worst actor on Earth? Will Smith's kid. Just so you know.
Also, Donald for Spiderman? That's the best we got? Spiderman is dead to me now. Dead to me. -
I may be biased because I love Donald Glover, but honestly, as long as they keep him nerdy, I don't mind a change. I agree with M.H. about the whole “peeking in on a parallel universe” thing. Though, knowing Hollywood, they would probably fuck it up.

Donald Glover is awesome, but by gosh it's just darn unlucky that he isn't white? Spiderman trilogy sucked thru and thru but hey at least he was white so it's ok.

He's a white character- Its like casting tom cruise as Mr T.

On the plus side, it would be all PC and show that race barriers are falling and that attitudes are changing and that America is more open and wonderful and egalitarian and so on. On the bad side, the racists would get all hot and bothered under the collar and we would have to hear about this non-issue on 24-hour cable news for weeks till we were all sick of it. The REEEEEEEALLY bad problem would be this: Hollywood would drop the ball. Think I am wrong? then I have two words for you. Spiderman Rap. Still think I am wrong? Then I have five more words for you. Go Ninja go ninja go!

Why the hell do you need to “reboot” a film franchise that is less than a decade old?
