25 Things That Americans Living In Europe Will Understand

Whether you're here for school, work or just for fun, this list (hopefully) describes the experience of an American living in Europe. It's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it.

    1. When someone has a super long monologue they're just dying to share about America's politics and lifestyle, good or bad.

    2. You sometimes get caught in the middle of a political protest that you have no clue why it is happening, but it seems dangerous.

    3. If you've been abroad less then a couple years, you still find dating locals exciting.

    4. But after like 2 years of living in one place, dating a local has lost its charm.

    5. When you get your hair done in a salon where their English is questionable and you haven't mastered the local language, you're just like

    6. When you see other Americans acting like idiots on their vacation, it's just like

    7. When your friends from home tell you how exciting you're life must be, you're just like

    8. When you get texts in another language or in broken English from your work/school/hospital/phone company

    9. When someone says something in broken English that sounds rude or dirty

    10. When friends from home talk about how cute the guys where you live must be.

    11. When you've been living somewhere not near familiar food for a while and you go out to eat, it's like

    12. When everyone is speaking English or a language you understand then suddenly switches to a language you don't understand

    13. When you live in Northern Europe and the sun finally comes out, you're just all

    14. Trying to learn Hungarian or a language with a totally different alphabet

    15. When you're speaking the local language and someone pretends they can't understand you or openly makes fun of your accent/pronunciation

    16. When someone asks you if America/your home is like a certain movie or TV show

    17. Watching an American about to/in the process of making a huge cultural faux pas

    18. Explaining an American store or having a local store explained to you

    19. Making a huge cultural faux pas yourself

    20. Stumbling upon a festival or free food in a place where you don't speak the language

    21. When a fellow American talks about how everything in America sucks compared to the country you're in or why everything in the country you're in sucks compared to America

    22. Sometimes you get a little homesick

    23. The frustration that comes with someone not understanding your English or attempt at the local language over the phone.

    24. Finding cheap flights on the weekend to other countries, but knowing you're going to be broke for three weeks straight when you come back

    25. Knowing that when you go home (if you ever do), you've had an amazing experience not many people get to have. And you'll be forever grateful for yourself for taking the opportunity to live abroad.
