19 Things That Professional Writers Will Understand

Especially geared towards novelists, but any writer will feel this list. Special thanks to Sami.

    1. When people ask how you expect to make a living as a writer

    2. When your agent/publisher isn't happy with your most recent draft, you'll just call your mom/BFF and be like

    3. When people tell you how 50 Shades of Grey and this one other book one time that made it big were self-published, so maybe you should consider it.

    4. When people ask what you write about

    5. Having to continue living in the same neighborhood you did in your early 20s because you've chosen to be a writer.

    6. When you tell someone you're a writer and they immediately tell you about how they one time tried to write a really awesome novel about aliens and another Civil War but it just didn't pan out.

    7. When a celebrity gets a huge book deal or you read that hyped up new $1 million book deal novel and it is uniquely terrible.

    8. When your agent or publisher likes where your story is headed

    9. When you have no idea where your current work in progress (WIP) is going

    10. After accomplishing your word count goal for the day.

    11. When your parents question your decision to be a writer.

    12. Actually leaving the house after writing in a PJ top, no pants and no make-up for three days straight

    13. Rereading what you wrote the next day after going on what you thought was a brilliant writing binge at 3AM

    14. When people are giving away crappy swag bags, food, etc. at conferences you'll always take it because...

    15. When you're determined to hit your impossibly high word count goal for the day

    16. Convincing yourself writing is what you're meant to be doing

    17. Realizing a certain author had already published 5 bestsellers by your age.

    18. When someone asks if you're writing the next Twilight

    19. But in the end, you do it because you can't imagine yourself doing anything else. And you love that you get to have serious job satisfaction, despite the setbacks.
