Escaped Chinese Activist Fought Against Forced Abortions

    Chen Guangcheng, the blind lawyer and activist who escaped house arrest last week, worked against forced abortion and sterilization of women in China, a practice some say is disturbingly common as the country struggles to enforce its one-child policy. In his absence, forced abortions may continue unchecked. Says the president of human rights organization Women's Rights Without Frontiers, "Chen may be safe for the moment, but the women for whom he risked everything are not."
