Barring same-sex couples from marrying actually costs the government money — an estimated $10 billion over a 10-year period. Here are a few things that cash could buy.
Outside of whether or not it should or shouldn’t be legal, or why big G is even in the business of issuing marriage licenses like it does for driving, how is it costing revenue? If anything, gay couples filing jointly will pay less in taxes. There is a myriad of things that couples do that divide the cost of living, hence paying less taxes. The only thing I can think of is couples will pay at the county clerk for their marriage license, but that is only one time and doesn’t benefit the federal government. Sorry, just had do show some critical thinking here.
Everyone 18+ can already vote…Not everyone can get married. So a voting tax would be ex post facto. The same taxes married straight couples pay being extended to married, gay couples would not be. Apples and oranges, buddy. The author clearly believes in the rightness of gay marriage and is simply tacking on some financial benefits to doing so. They are not saying that we should justify making any political decision in a vacuum because of potential monetary benefits. The article just highlights what a plus it would be. They are also pointing out the hypocrisy of Republicans spending money on trying to prevent LGBT folks from marrying when said Republicans are constantly harping about financial responsibility and the economy.
I love the irony of legally allowing gays to marry as another way to tax them. That’s the Democrats for you, seeing the bottom line to fund big government.
$10 billion… that’s less than a percent of the budget. But we’re missing the bigger thing for the economy: Wedding spending! And the lawyers are going to have a field day with gay divorce. When you include those two things we might just fix the budget!
