RNC Targeting Eliot Spitzer In Fundraising Pitch

An opening shot at the possible Democratic candidate for comptroller.

The Republican National Committee is taking on a new target: Former New York governor and attorney general Eliot Spitzer. The RNC is releasing a graphic harking back to the prostitution scandal that led to his resignation as governor.

The ad, which will be emailed to prospective donors and posted to Facebook and Twitter, will plug Republican New York City comptroller candidate John Burnett. It comes with a statement from RNC deputy communications director Sarah Isgur Flores.

"Last time you heard from former New York Democrat Governor Eliot Spitzer he was employing a prostitution service and embarrassing New Yorkers. Now Democrats could choose him to be the next Comptroller of New York City. Given his history, would YOU trust Eliot Spitzer to handle YOUR money? As Republicans, we think voters deserve better," Flores writes. "We think New Yorkers deserve new leaders like John Burnett, who is running for City Comptroller to bring fiscal responsibility back to City Hall. Every day, we're working to identify candidates like John and help them defeat Democrats at the local, state and federal level. Don't let this opportunity pass you by."

Spitzer is competing in the Democratic primary Tuesday for the chance to be the nominee for city comptroller.
