How The NRA Twitter Handles A Mass Shooting: Silence
The model is to go silent for at least a day, depending on the scope of the tragedy.
1. July 20, 2012, Aurora, Colorado, Theater Shooting: 10 Days Without Tweeting
2. Aug. 5, 2012, Sikh Temple Shooting: One Day Without Tweeting
3. Dec. 11, 2012, Clackamas Town Center Shooting: One Day Without Tweeting
4. Dec. 14, 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting: Three Days (And Counting) Without Tweeting

Beck 5 months agoNot a member or fan of the NRA but I would theorize the reason they are not posting on Twitter now (or Facebook - I just checked that and they have pulled their page there) is to avoid a flame war between all the Anti-gun and Pro-gun supporters, and lets face it - the reality is that guns are only a very tiny problem in this issue but are being turned into a political hot button.
I’ve been on a few other forums where both have been posting and the comments here are mild compared to some of the venom being spewed.
Our politicians need to take a deeper look the issue. Why does the problem keep occurring? Why is it always young males? What can be done to help them before it gets anywhere to this point? -

michaelw61 5 months agofor me from abroad(Germany), by far the sickest thing that I often read is that American people seem to think they really can “defend themselves” by wearing weapons. Does anyone know how many people in the last 50 years have successfully defended theirselves with shotguns?Compare that number to the innocently shot to death.

danf18 5 months agoGun sales skyrocket again. To the mentally ill that legally are allowed to own weapons,it is the constant paranoid fear that “they” are coming to take away every bit of one’s precious arsenal. The real problem is that most of the people who own guns wouldn’t be able to own them if strict mental health screening was required to own a gun. Anyone who’s mantra is “shoot first, ask questions later” is obviously a shooting waiting to happen.

italysprincess 5 months agoYes, bc the NRA is responsible for the shooting… (Note the sarcasm)
-
-
swester 5 months agoDidn’t note the sarcasm, but I noted the ignorance and stupidity. An organization that lobbies for the widespread armament of American citizens and allows guns to be in the easy-accessible hands of this shooter’s (and every shooter’s) relatives is incontrovertibly responsible in part for what happened.
-
italysprincess 5 months ago@swester it’s the gun owners fault for not keeping the gun properly locked and making sure that only they have access to it.

WhatTheHolyHeck 5 months agoThis post isn’t blaming the NRA for the incident; it is saying the NRA has a measure of responsibility. There’s a difference between blame and responsibility.

Beck 5 months agoActually no. China has the most strictest gun control laws that exist (must keep watch on the peasants) and they have had a rash of brutal knife/cleaver wielding attacks on children. The latest occurred this past Friday at the same time as the attack in Connecticut but was not reported widely in the news oddly enough: Knife attack at Chinese school wounds 22 children
-
Jack Morris 4 months agoI guess knife fights are better.
As long as you’re young, healthy, and have a large build. Guns are equalizers. They are what empowers people to live without the fear of being taken over by someone bigger or stronger. Why don’t you tell my grandma not to carry a gun anymore and instead use a knife? That’s fair, right? Two thugs against an old lady with a pocket-knife?

Benjamin Sapiens 5 months agoLet’s be honest, though: shutting the hell up and keeping out of sight is pretty much the classiest thing the NRA could possibly do at a time like this.

Dustyroads 5 months agoThe NRA has NOTHING to do with tragedies. People these days are unbelievably dumb.
-
-
Solus 5 months agoThe NRA is one of the main reasons for our lax gun laws and the wide availability of firearms. If you can’t make the connection between the wide availability of firearms and our exceptionally high rate of gun violence for a developed nation then that’s not a problem with other people being dumb.
-
Ryan 5 months agoGoing off of that logic we shouldn’t have laws for anything, because there will always be people who break them. No law is perfect. The goal is to reduce gun violence, not eliminate it. Also worth noting the the NRA plays a large part in lobbying to protect the act that allows firearms manufacturers to illegally sell weapons in the first place, so it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

freak dageek 5 months agoThe NRA may be a powerful, well-funded, influential lobby, folks, but…they don’t set policy. Turn your outrage where it belongs.

Jack Morris 4 months agonope, they are there because as an american citizen and an NRA member, I PAY THEM TO BE THERE. You do realize that hating the NRA is fuitless and the only reason they exist is because SO MANY citizens pay a lot of money for their protection against liberal lawmakers. They aren’t some faceless machine. They ARE the people, and they are powerful because the PEOPLE support them.
-
TheMusixMyLife 5 months agoPeople. The NRA did not have anything to do with this mentally unstable man doing what he did. Whether or not guns are legal or illegal, people will find away to play out their evil deeds. All of this nonsense needs to stop. I personally know people who have there carry license and guess what?!? It saved there life!!! Stop placing the blame on people that had nothing to do with this horrific act of violence.

Solus 5 months agoWrong. This killer had access to guns because his mother was a gun collector. The NRA has been promoting that activity, and the general availability of firearms to the populace, for decades. She was the first victim of the guns the NRA says “protect” us. Had there not been a gun available it isn’t necessarily true that he would have found another way. Bombs and chemical/biological weapons require experience to construct and use effectively. And cops monitor purchases of the precursor materials. Knives are widely available, but much harder to kill as many people with. There was just an attack on 22 children in china by a guy with a knife, none of them died.
