Chuck Hagel Disavows Statement He Doesn’t Remember Making On Israel
Chuck Hagel has disavowed a statement he reportedly made at a speech at Rutgers University in 2007 saying that the State Department was becoming adjunct to the Israel Foreign Minister’s office according to Senator Lindsey Graham. Graham said Hagel wrote to him in a letter that he didn’t recall making the statement, but disavowed it if he did.

evilito 2 months agoIs Lindsay Graham getting paid by the Israeli government? It’s a serious question - it’s uncanny the extent to which he will go to make sure no one even thinks about uttering anything slightly critical of little old Israel. It’s as though he’s the Senator from Israel, not from South Carolina. This whole Hagel fiasco has shown very clearly the extent to which the legislative branch of this country - the one that supposedly directly represents the citizens of the UNITED STATES - is beholden to the interests of another country. It’s disgusting.

alexduvall18 2 months agoFor anyone who cares, here’s what Graham actually said, on Fox News Sunday: Graham: “Well, on the day of the vote, there was a blog posting about a speech, I think in 2007 or 8, that Chuck Hagel gave at Rutgers University. And the blogger was a supporter of Senator Hagel, who was thinking about running for President, and he put on his blog the next day six points of the speech question and answer session, and point six was, allegedly, Senator Hagel said that the U.S. State Department was an adjunct of the Israeli Foreign Minister’s Office. Which I think would have been breathtaking if he had said that, to have such a view. I got a letter back from Senator Hagel in response to my question, ‘Did you say that and do you believe that?’ And the letter said that he did not recall saying that; he disavows that statement.” Wallace: “Is that enough for you?” Graham: “Well, in fact, if that’s true, that would end that matter because he’s previously said, in a book, that the Jewish Lobby intimidates members of Congress, particularly the U.S. Senate, and pushes us to make very bad decisions. If this second statement were true, he said that the Secretary of State’s Office is under the control of the Israeli Foreign Minister’s Office, those two together, would show an edge and a view of the U.S. / Israeli relationship way out of the mainstream. So I’ll just take him at his word unless something new comes along.” (What’s interesting about his back and forth is Graham is sort-of implying Hagel outright denied it happened at all. Has the letter been released?)

alexduvall18 2 months agoGraham: “Mr. Hagel, an obscure, five year old internet blog post states that, while it isn’t directly quoting a speech you gave, that you maybe said something along the lines of the following.” Hagel “Umm, I’ve given hundreds of speeches, but I certainly don’t recall having said that, and would disavow anyone making that statement.” Graham: “Just a quick follow-up Mr. Hagel. Could you also let this committee know when you stopped beating your wife?” Hagel: *facepalm* Oh FFS…
