Who’s Responsible For The Idea That Beautiful Means Super Skinny?
Israel just banned models who are too skinny. But where does the problem of being “too thin” start?

loveandspace 4 months agoNot sure how seriously to take an info-graphic that spells “populace” wrong … also by placing these in a circle it seems to be suggesting a cyclical process, but the cycle here starts with the top element of the circle and ends at the “The public” - it doesn’t make any sense to present this information in this way, since there is no implied causation leading from “The public” to “Designers.” Arrows starting with “Designers” and leading to “The public” would make much more sense, although frankly even that is problematic, considering that there are some pretty big generalizations/leaps in logic happening here.

Because a year agoFor much of human history people were thin “naturally” because there wasn’t much food to eat. Being full-figured was a status symbol in those days, because it meant you were rich enough to live the good life. Now that the US and much of Europe is in a time of incredible prosperity relative to historic levels, being thin is a status symbol. Most American women would love to lose a few pounds, but only actresses, models, and the rich have the time and money to spend on the exercise and healthy eating that makes slimness possible. It started in the 60’s with Twiggy, the first super-skinny supermodel. Before that most if not all of the “sexy” female celebrities had the hourglass-type figure, with noticeable feminine curves.
