Introducing BuzzFeed Shift: It’s For Women! (And Dudes! Kind Of!)

So. Who else is sick of the word LADY?

I know, right? Now tell your friends!
Introducing BuzzFeed Shift: It's For W...
Amy Odell

A shift is a dress. It’s also a computer key, and a verb and a noun. And now it’s the newest part of BuzzFeed — mostly intended for women, but if you’re a man, feel free to stay a while. Because the questions we plan to answer over the very many forthcoming posts you will find here are important to everyone.

Such as: How can women bridge the gap between our income and our male counterparts’? How can we attain the power we need to make decisions about our own bodies? How can we be taken seriously as we work toward those things while indulging in a little mindless feminine fun, like shopping, reading Us Weekly, or tweeting about how Nicole Kidman looked like a big Vajazzle at the Golden Globes?

Sharing posts like this one (ahem!) is a good place to start. Through this shared content — and cat videos — in our Facebook and Twitter feeds we come together around cute stuff and big ideas that are not just about dissatisfaction with the status quo, but more important, shifting it in a new direction. One that allows us to be upset without being “crazy,” sexy without being “slutty,” assertive without being “bitchy,” and eventually, equal in the world — which, after all, is a place where women face terrifying challenges to access to reproductive health care and the termination of unwanted pregnancies; where only around 20 women are CEOS of Fortune 500 companies; where the troubling ideal of beauty is super-thin, surgically enhanced, devoid of age, and puzzlingly scantily clad. It’s also a place where Kim Kardashian makes $10,000 by tweeting about some website called ShoeDazzle, and you can spend $75 to have a day’s worth of juice delivered to your home to consume, not as a liquid diet, but a cleanse.

Leading BuzzFeed Shift along with me are Anna North and Hillary Reinsberg. Anna comes to us from Jezebel, where she wrote about science, education, sports, and everyone’s favorite sexist Italian, Silvio Berlusconi. Hillary Reinsberg joins us from Abrams Media, where she chronicled powerful women in business. And I come from New York magazine, where I wrote about fashion and all the silly things people in the industry do — and the most fashionable clothes-wearing cats, of course.

So, enjoy this space. And would you please follow us on Twitter? Or send us email? Don’t hold back! Because if we can promise you anything, it’s that we most definitely won’t.

XOXO
Amy “No Apostrophe” Odell

Shift is disappointing. I’m going back to The Hairpin.

Not having a Y chromosome has me constantly wondering where can I find make-up and stickers and ponies and myspace.com Ryan Gosling on BuzzFeed?  Here on Shift, that’s where! Bloody wonderful.

I say give it a change, y’all. I think it’s nice that us lady Buzzfeeders can come read important, serious stuff about women’s issues AND get a sprinkling of humor in between. Let’s just hope this area of BF isn’t a target for the male chauvinists and their “get back in the kitchen” zingers.

To be honest, I am not excited about this vertical yet, but I’m not going to condemn it BECAUSE IT JUST LAUNCHED. I’m going to wait and see what happens. I do, however, want to briefly explain my concerns. I don’t want to see a clone of a fashion magazine or TMZ here. There are enough women’s sites on the web that regurgitate vapid stereotypes about women day after day. You want to give me something else? Excellent. I await that. Because I really want to read a website that intelligently engages with women’s issues. I’d like to see overlap with the other verticals and the front page. Frankly, I think it’s worth cultivating women’s space on BuzzFeed, but not at the expense of having all the interesting women-friendly content get relegated to a specific vertical. I’m not saying that this is going to happen. These are just things that I’ve been thinking about. I wish you all the best; I’ll be keeping an eye on Shift for now.

so…like cooking and knitting and taking care of the kids?
Or is it more about how to mix a great drink, load a fine bowl, and make “daddy” happy? In any case, I’m for it.
Women get shafted every fucking day, given short change for pay, given the jobs that are genderistic in nature, told to continue work when you get home, and oh….by the way….
YOUR body is not YOUR body…it belongs to a bunch of male, degenerate republicans like Ryan, Romney, and Santorum.
      Complaints?
      Get over it. nah…
g’damn it, paint this entire set PINK if guys don’t like it (and we don’t)
      ha!
And now, for my best male trick.
I bow way low and shuffle backwards towards the door and slide out with the magic words…
“I’ll have the ice cream sent over right away, mam.”
      d=^))

I feel buzzfeed is evolving away from the cooky-weird-crazy post to a more ‘serious’ content . I guessed it’s inevitable and it won’t be long before my default favorite site for procrastination becomes a generic web-azine. rip old buzzfeed

Buzzfeed, you continue to amaze me by your acceptance of women and all other important issues that need to be accepted. This is a wonderful idea! What better way to show women they are equal to men by creating a different section specifically for them to go to on your website!? It makes perfect sense!!!

Trying to promote feminism on buzzfeed… You’ll have better luck on 4chan.  P.S. I dislike feminists; prefer humanists.

This is so brutal. Not only are you assuming what women want to hear but a separation is being created. The gender binary and gendered stereotypes are being re-enforced and there is nothing progressive about this at all. Even if you had a diverse group of women picking the posts, whats the point since it will just look like the regular feed?

Do we really need to be separating this content from ‘regular’ buzzfeed? It seems kind of unnecessary to me.

Ugh, ugh, ugh. Do I start with the hypocrisy of being all, like ‘Yaaay feminism!’ followed by ‘mindless’ ‘feminine’ activities (e.g. I like to shop, which is mindless; nevermind if it is for books, or technology, or GROCERIES). Or do I start with how this reeks of Jezebel-like rhetoric(most likely as one of the editors comes from there); rhetoric, as others have noted, is not really appreciated by (I’d guess) most women? Or do I start with how BF used to be FOR a community, BY a community, and is now attempting to be the new Gawker? Oh look! Gawker owns Jezebel—a site ‘for women’! And Gizmodo—a site for technology kind of like BF’s new FWD section! I can’t wait ‘til BF comes out with their version of Kotaku! I think I’ll start by going to Reddit instead of BF. If I want more faux-editorial ‘news’ trying to tell me what to like—look like, sound like, smell like—, to tell me that my time immersed in literature needs to be spent either breaking or adhering to gender normativity instead of just doing whatever the hell *I* want, and to tell me in absurdly hyperbolic language that ‘I’m a woman hear me roar’; then I’ll just go to every single media outlet that’s ALREADY in existence. I don’t need a new one. What I needed was COMMUNITY sourced discourse, not more powerful, successful women dribbling baby food down my throat.
