The statement that when a person “ignores” a friend request is also inaccurate. As per the link the author embedded, the Facebook hints page says the sender will NOT receive a notice saying that the request was ignored, but will only be able to send another request in the future. If you simply literally ignore it, the request still shows up as a pending request on their list. To me, much more obvious than clicking on ignore.
