Okay, here is my problem with this parody (aside from the fact that, while the idea was funny in theory, in execution nothing about this video was at all humorous): She’s parodying a low mezzo-soprano song (high belt, yes, but very little range) to try and satirize Disney’s use of sopranos for their princesses. Your message is fucked right there if the example you use isn’t… Um… Exemplifying what you’re trying to say. The YouTube user caustically remarks that the requisite for being a Disney Princess is being a soprano. Elsa is a very low mezzo-soprano, Anna is a mezzo-soprano, Ariel is a mezzo-soprano, Belle has a mezzo range. Cinderella is a deep contralto. Mulan has a mezzo range. Rapunzel is an alto. Merida doesn’t even fucking sing. The only true sopranos I can recall off the top of my head are Aurora and Snow White. Disney actually frequently breaks a long-standing operatic and musical theatre tradition of only casting top sopranos as your young, virginal leads. I think maybe this YouTube user’s real problem is a lack of formal training and an inflated conception of her own abilities.
