25 Quotes That Inspired “This Is 40”

Judd Apatow’s film “This Is 40” came out last December but I think it is safe to say we’re all still talking about it. From the scene where Paul Rudd can’t cancel his party because he already paid the catering company to when Leslie Mann only has a hundred dollar bill in her purse to the Ryan Adams cameo that ultimately saves their marriage, this comedic yarn about love and arguing is a future classic. Here we trace the inspiration for the film!

“So long as the product is sold, everything is taking its regular course from the standpoint of the capitalist producer.” -Karl Marx

“You’re on Earth. There’s no cure for that.” -Samuel Beckett

“Everytime you think you’re walking you’re just moving the ground/
Everytime you think you’re talking you’re just moving your mouth/
Everytime you’re looking you’re just looking down.” -Modest Mouse

“It is the characteristic of privilege and of every privileged position to kill the mind and heart of men. The privileged man, whether practically or economically, is a man depraved in mind and heart.” -Mikhail Bakunin

“Only one man ever understood me, and he didn’t understand me.” -Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

“Poor human nature, what horrible crimes have been committed in thy name! Every fool, from king to policeman, from the flatheaded parson to the visionless dabbler in science, presumes to speak authoritatively of human nature. The greater the mental charlatan, the more definite his insistence on the wickedness and weaknesses of human nature. Yet, how can any one speak of it today, with every soul in a prison, with every heart fettered, wounded, and maimed?” -Emma Goldman

“Life is very, very complicated and so films should be allowed to be too.” -David Lynch

“Consider the subtleness of the sea; how its most dreaded creatures glide under water, unapparent for the most part, and treacherously hidden beneath the loveliest tints of azure. Consider also the devilish brilliance and beauty of many of its most remorseless tribes, as the dainty embellished shape of many species of sharks. Consider, once more, the universal cannibalism of the sea; all whose creatures prey upon each other, carrying on eternal war since the world began.” -Herman Melville

“He was coming to understand he could not come to rectify anything in his life, only forget.” -Mikhail Bulkagov

“The supreme mystery of despotism, its prop and stay, is to keep men in a state of deception, and with the specious title of religion to cloak the fear by which they must be held in check, so that they will fight for their servitude as if for salvation.” -Baruch Spinoza

“The gods are on the side of the stronger.” -Tacitus

“There’s really no such thing as the ‘voiceless’. There are only the deliberately silenced, or the preferably unheard.” -Arundhati Roy

“You are invisible, limpid, transparent. You no longer exist. Across the passing hours, the succession of days, the procession of the seasons, the flow of time, you survive without joy and without sadness. Without a future and without a past. Just like that: simply, self evidently, like a drop of water forming on a drinking tap on a landing.” -Georges Perec

“I have wanted women whose very shoes are worth all I have ever possessed.” -John Fante

“Some day, my son, you are going to learn that the two greatest joys of being a man are beating the hell out of someone and getting the hell beaten out of you, good night.” -Richard Price

Where you come from is gone, where you thought you were going to never was there, and where you are is no good unless you can get away from it” -Flannery O’Connor

“What do you despise? By this are you truly known.” -Frank Herbert

“I don’t want your love unless you know I am repulsive, and love me even as you know it.” -Georges Bataille

“The nature of peoples is first crude, then severe, then benign, then delicate, finally dissolute.” -Giambattista Vico

“True beauty is something that attacks, overpowers, robs, and finally destroys.”
-Yukio Mishima

“I could EAT YOUR HEART & asshole you’d never know it.” -Joyce Carol Oates
