Hospital Parking Plan Thwarted After Discovery Of Buried Bodies On Campus

And you thought you had parking problems.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center has to find somewhere else to put a parking garage after finding more than 1,000 bodies buried beneath the original site.

And if THAT'S not enough to send a chill up your spine, officials think the bodies were probably patients at the Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum roughly a century ago.

This is the asylum, in case you need more haunting mental imagery.

But it's not just a matter of relocating a parking garage. UMMC's new Children's Justice Center and Cancer Society Hope Lodge will likely be relocated, as more bodies are believed to be buried below both sites.

"Others plans may have to change, too. Medical center officials had hoped to use the property west of the dental school for future expansion, but (Dr. James Keeton, dean of the medical school) said they might have to rethink that approach, because other bodies may lie beneath the earth — former slaves, TB victims and possibly even Civil War dead."

Reburying the unmarked bodies would cost about $3 million, a price tag the medical center can't afford, Keeton says.
