Barnaby Joyce Is Still Going On About Killing Dogs

But this time the agriculture minister kind of has a point.

Barnaby Joyce, the agriculture minister formerly known as That Australian Politician Who Wants To Euthanise Johnny Depp's Dogs is at it again, this time threatening to kill all wild dogs in regional Australia.

Launching a website to help farmers share information on how to best control wild dogs, the minister said “combating the scourge of wild dogs is an issue close to my heart."

“It’s not just about the estimated up to $66 million that wild dog attacks cost Australia’s agricultural sector each year through livestock losses, disease transmission and control costs. It’s also about the emotional impact that wild dog attacks have on the farmers who put their blood, sweat and tears into raising and protecting their livestock."

Wild dogs are actually a huge problem for farmers, and they also prey on native Australian wildlife.

In his news conference today, Barnaby Joyce painted a graphic picture of the destruction caused by wild dogs. He said it's not just a problem for farmers, there were reports of wild dogs attacking domestic pets as close to cities as the Gold Coast.

"Peoples' own pets have been literally eaten and all we have found of them is basically where they have got their head out of the way and the rest of their body has been eaten," he said.

"They kill because they enjoy killing. We have this immense cruelty of their eating the kidneys out of the sheep and then leaving the sheep alive to struggle and die."

Farmers have been calling for a national strategy to deal with the increase in wild dog numbers.

The federal government provided $280,000 to support the first phase of a National Wild Dog Action Plan in addition to $25.8 million towards pest control in drought-affected areas in this year's budget.
