The women are reportedly two sisters – Arti Kumar, 22, and her sister Pooja, 19. The Times of India said:

Initially the duo ... suffered in silence as the men passed obscene remarks and made lewd gestures at them. However when the men started picking on [a] pregnant woman as well, the girls took matters into their own hands and bravely fought back.

It appears that the girls were on their way home from college in the village of Rohtak, 70 miles northwest of New Delhi.

According to The Telegraph, one of the girls said:

We boarded the bus from Rohtak bus stand, this boy started teasing us by trying to give his phone number to us. When we protested, he called his friends and they started making obscene gestures. When I walked up to him asking not to make such gestures, he grabbed me by the neck while others held back my sister. After heated exchanges, one of the boys called his friends asking him to beat us up. One of them beat my sister while two others caught hold of me.

The Hindu reported that not only did the bus driver, conductor, and co-passengers not intervene, they were apparently seen "dissuading the girls from lodging a complaint with the police".

According to the Times of India: "Eventually the sisters were overpowered, their mobile phones taken away and they were thrown off the moving bus causing them minor injuries."

The incident has given rise to the hashtag #RohtakBravehearts. A number of Twitter users have asked why other passengers didn't intervene.

What the other ppl I mean guys were doing when these #RohtakBravehearts were bashing eve teasers. Cowards go get a life

All respect to #RohtakBravehearts for standing against molestation. It's a Shame that everyone in the bus just sat there doing nothing.

@AamAadmiParty Come on girls be ready with your belts for road side eve-teasers, No more tolerance #RohtakBravehearts

The Rohtak episode where 2 girls r filmed beating eve teasers again reflects on the apathy of bystanders who'd rather watch/film than help.

The Hindu reported that the incident was recorded by the pregnant woman the men harassed and "went viral on social media on Sunday evening". She also accompanied them to a police post.

The three men were "Eve-teasing" – a term used in India to refer to sexual harassment or molestation of women by men in public places.
