Some held Pakistani flags, and there were also banners proclaiming "We're sorry we let you down" and "We're stronger, we're united, we're Pakistan."

Many brought candles to the north terrace of the square.

The organisers tried to keep the event free of politics.

BuzzFeed News saw some heated discussions as the organisers tried to stop any of the speakers from making political points.

In Pakistan, newspapers are already beginning to criticise the country's politicians for failing to stop the Taliban.

For the most part, they were successful: The event remained apolitical.

Organising figures like Shahbaz Khan, the former London president of the political party Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, or PTI, were keen to play down their political credentials to BuzzFeed News.

The death toll from the attack has risen to 141 – 132 of whom were children, aged 16 or younger.
