Footage Has Surfaced Of A Baby Elephant Being Rescued From Poachers In A Tiny Plane

Sadly, the story does not have a happy ending.

Here's Gary Roberts, an American nurse and missionary, and here's his new friend, Max. Max is the one on the left.

Max had just been rescued from poachers when this video, viewable on the BBC website, was filmed. He can be seen gripping a bottle of water and putting his trunk on Roberts' shoulder.

Max was an orphan. Poachers killed 100 elephants between Chad and Cameroon in March 2013, and his parents were among them.

Tragically, Max died shortly after his escape.

The Daily Mail reported that this was due to "his traumatic experience and the cow's milk he was fed in a village before being rescued".

Sadly, far from being a happy story, the footage is simply an indictment of the horrors of elephant poaching.
