Updated: A 14-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged by police.

Police have arrested a teen after an elderly woman was punched in the face on a bus in Croydon.

According to the Metropolitan police, "On Friday, 16 October at about 15:20hrs, the victim was travelling on a Route 166 bus on Brighton Road, Coulsdon when the two female suspects boarded the bus without paying."

The police statement goes on: "A lengthy verbal exchange between the driver and suspects followed, which resulted in most of the passengers getting off the bus."

The 87-year-old was punched in the face, before both suspects ran away. She was assisted by another passenger, and the driver called the police.

She was taken by ambulance to St Helier Hospital, and discharged later that day, having suffered a black eye.

The police described the suspects as "as black girls, aged between 14 and 18 years old," and said that one of them was wearing a black head band.

A 14-year-old teen was today arrested on suspicion of ABH by officers from the Met's roads and transport policing command. She was taken to a south London police station and was later charged: She will appear at Croydon Youth Court on 10 December.

According to a Met statement, "Officers have also identified the second female involved in the incident - she has not been arrested at this time."
