But when it was launched in 1888 it revolutionised popular photography.

Before its release, photography was complicated and expensive.

The camera was invented by an American, George Eastman (1854-1932). It was a small, leather-covered wooden box.

To operate it you simply turned a key, pulled a string, and pressed a button.

There was no zoom facility: you simply pointed it at your subject.

And these stunning circular photographs resulted.

The camera had enough film for 100 photographs.

Once the film had been exposed, the entire camera was returned to the factory for the film to be developed and printed.

It had a great sales slogan: "‘You press the button, we do the rest."
