Have to agree that “Crash” was a dud. I couldn't even sit through the whole thing. But “Brokeback Mountain”, “Capote” and, especially, “Good Night, and Good Luck” easc would have been a better choice. “In the Heat of the Night” was better than “Guess Who's Coming to Dinner” and “The Graduate” (which is today better known, but not better). “It's a Wonderful Life” is one of the few movies older than 50 years that can hold my attention. (“Sunset Boulevard” and “Wizard of Oz” are the others). In my opinion, a classic is a movie that will continue to hold the attention of humans until humans go extinct.

Hello? Anybody home? How can you leave out Star Wars which is one of the best all time movies and lost to the overrated Annie Hall in 1977.

I have to vehemently disagree with your standing on “It's a Wonderful Life” vs. “The Best Years of Our Lives.” While Life was, and still is, a wonderful movie, it was partly a fairy tale, a story about a man getting to see what life would have been like had he not been around. Best Years was about the real life experiences of men returning home from war, and as such, still holds true to the returning vets of our day and age. Not to mention using actual vets from WWII as the main characters, and you get true feelings, not just actors going through the motions.

How about “The Color Purple” losing to “Out of Africa.” That certainly deserves an outrage rating of 5 out of 5!

Reds over Chariots of Fire? Definitely not. Raging Bull over Chariots of Fire? Maybe.
But what about actor and actress snubs?
Mickey Rourke was snubbed in “The Wrestler” for the always politically motivated (which the Academy loves) Sean Penn in “Milk.”

In the Heat of the Night was a very good movie. But none of this outrages when we remember Crash. Can we talk about Crash?

How about American Beauty winning in 1999? What was that about? And even worse: Crash in 2005, which beat out Brokeback Mountain, Capote and Good Night and Good Luck. The Academy is stupid.

Surely Raging Bull deserved to win over Reds and Chariots of Fire?

Can't say I agree with your outrage at Shakespeare In Love beating Saving Private Ryan. Yes, it was a mediocre film, but then so is SPR. Thin Red Line should have won in what was a pretty thin year that year. What about Titanic winning out in 1997? Although again, that was a poor year - although LA Confidential was surely more deserving.

Outrage? That Bonnie and Clyde and the Maltese Falcon didn't win? Those movies were MEDIOCRE. And not even remotely as good as the films that won. Bonnie and Clyde was better than In the Heat of the Night? Are you kidding me?  Wow…most of these are just mediocre movies (Subjective opinion!) Worst taste ever. The Big Chill? Amanda, if you are actually outraged that the Big Chill and Beauty and the Beast didn't win an Oscar, I think you have a very misguided outrage function.
