$10,000 fine = one less shopping trip (she still got over $400,000 for losing!) More apt punishment would have been to bring her out to centre court during the final and make her sit on the naughty seat, in the corner, facing the wall.

calling out serena does not = giving mcenroe, connors, agassi, etc. a pass. it just means most people dont give a shit about tennis unless its on buzzfeed… myself included.

While I think sportsmanship should be part of the game, I can see why she got so angry. It was a terrible call.

Allow me to help you put this in perspective: I bet you didn’t think John McEnroe was “trashy” for unsporting conduct. So why Serena Williams?

i don’t care if the call was right or wrong… the point is the threatened the line judge, very very immature. if she would have not threatened the judge but simply had a conversation with the judge and complain about that call thats fine but to do what she did she deserved to lose. i will be pushing for a suspension and a fine. this kind of reaction has no place in any sport…. come on guys lets put this is perspective: football one of the most aggressive sports when you get a bad call the players don’t go threatening the ref… Serena has no class and tennis would be better with out her!!!

I’d be against this if the call was right but it was clearly not. I despise the infallibility of refs in sports so I am absolutely for this. Fuck you refs. You should all be replaced with computers.

The manner of the outburst was really uncalled for, but watching the match, I can understand why she was upset. You don’t see a lot of foot fault calls at that level of tennis, but it was a bad call — a really bad call, at a point where Serena was just trying to keep hope alive in the match. She probably would have lost the match anyway, but she really didn’t need the extra help.

This seems to be out of character for Serena. I think this will prove to the beginning of a series of problems with this kid. This is a major gaffe for her first offense.

You obviously don’t know much about the game. The difference is that McEnroe, Conners, etc, did not threaten to kill the officials. She showed her true colors when she lost her temper.
She was not disqualified by the way. She was penalized one point, which happened to be match point. It was her second code violation of the match, which the rules call for the one point penalty. To blame the linesperson for doing her job is simply ignorant.
To say she would probably have beaten Klijsters is further proof that you do not know the game. Serena was beaten, and just could not accept that. You bleading heart liberals always want to play the race card when someone of color is held responsible for bad behavior. Get real.

Why was it okay for McEnroe, Connors, Agassi, and a few more male tennis players to throw temper tantrums, throw their racquets, and much more and not be disqualified. Why weren’t they called derrogatory names like “B——” or “Diva” or the other terms all of you have called a great player like Williams? Is it because they are men? And is it because Serena is a woman and black? I think there is more patience in the world for male aggression than for females who act out aggressively like men. It’s okay if females are passive aggressive, but it’s not okay for women (especially black, athletic women) to act aggressively in this manner. It’s easier to make an example out of Miss Williams and put her in her place than say a petite woman female tennis player.
I think they should have removed the linesman for aggravating her. They let it go on too long. Miss Williams had probably had enough of the discrimination over the years. More discrimination than you can imagine. It still is not an easy road for female black athletes in tennis. Give her some credit both her and her sister have endured more than you know and stop calling her names. She is a great athlete and probably would have beat Klijsters.

I have to say: it was SO goddamn funny watching it happen. Obviously you can’t yell that, obviously she was going to lose anyway, blah blah sore loser—just watch her face in this video! Hilarious.
