Despite the Northeastern “stress belt,” West Virginia takes home the prize for most neurotic state. A Woody Allen-less New York settled for third.

  • I don’t know, plenty of neurotic Floridians, especially after the 2000 election. This study also doesn’t take into account — or at least it’s not well-reflected by the uniform color of each state — that there are certain uncharacteristic inlets within typically neurotic or typically non-neurotic states. Austin, TX, Chapel Hill, NC, Seattle, WA. Even the bulk of upstate New York operates at a languorous pace that ought to tilt the data of one nutty little island.

  • Sooo… they’re defining “neurotic” as having high levels of anxiety and stress? It seems like being stressed out does not necessarily mean you are neurotic, no?  Especially if that stress is caused by living bellow the poverty line and having your uninsured home washed away in a giant flood? Neurosis implies that you have some mental imbalance that is causing your stress, rather than an external circumstance.
