Style Buzz Consult this handy chart (from—to the best of my knowledge—a late 90s Seventeen magazine)! What's scary is that I probably read this in earnest the first time around.

I was actually picking on my mom earlier about listening to emo music all the time, so I researched it.. apparently the emo movement started in the 90's (which is how I remember it) with the plaid pants and listening to Weezer.. the “I wish my lawn was emo so it would cut itself too” emo didn't come about until around 2002-ish.
Apparently it's from August 2002! Weird, I remembered it being much earlier…why the hell was I still reading Seventeen? http://www.punknews.org/article/3802
article here makes it look like it's from 2002, which sounds about right to me considering i remember the article coming out in mid high school for me. big deal with all the posers, obviously.
It's got to be from the 90s…the girl's got a Discman. A Discman!!
Buzzfeed, Ned Hepburn, Olivia Allin… why can't anybody post a scan of this thing that's high-res enough so you can actually read it?!
I really don't think this is from the 90s. I never heard the term “emo” until 2001 or 2002. Also, I think one of the pick-up lines reads “do you blog here often” (har har) - blogs were not at all common, especially among teens, in the 90s. /endrant.
Wow, this “style” is so made-up, it's ridiculous. Sneakers? Who under 30 doesn't wear fucking sneakers?
Ned reblogged from Olivia Allin. Correct attributions are important!
I'm totally emo.
lol discman
