      But when do you make that distinction? If an intruder is in your home and your children are in their beds how long are you going to give that guy the chance to hurt them before you decide there is no other choice? I keep a gun in my house that I hope I never have to use, but if the safety of my family is threatened, you better believe I won’t wait around.

      Agreed. But turning around and running away from someone is not something we should ask people to do either. I’m not saying that when confronted we should immediately punch/shoot the assailant, but if attempts at defusing the situation have failed, MAKING someone retreat is wrong.  Self-defense common law has usually been you had better have backed yourself into a wall before fighting back, and that is ridiculous.
