Youtube Lays Some Smackdown On Viacom
Youtube bared its teeth today at Viacom, the media giant who has an ongoing $1 billion lawsuit on against them. They charge that even as Viacom was making their threats, they had hired multiple marketing agencies to “rough up” videos of shows like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report and post them to the site from Kinko's computers. It's a cyberdrama!

Viacom kind of has a point though. A humongous chunk of Youtube's content is copyrighted material that really shouldn't be there. And they really make it extraordinarily difficult to get that content removed. It's almost like Youtube WANTS that illegal content to stay there as long as it can… hmm. I don't see why they can't just have users flag videos for copyright, and then have a staffer check the video to see if the flag is real and not just spam. It seems really weird that the only way to get a video removed for copyright violation is by having your lawyer send a C&D letter to Youtube.
