It starts with a shot of the sands of Tatooine (it's the only identifiable planet in the teaser, really), while a threatening voice speaks of an "awakening."

Rather than show us any of the characters we already know, however, director J.J. Abrams has chosen to introduce four characters new to the saga — starting with John Boyega (Attack the Block) as a Stormtrooper.

Next, we meet a woman in a hurry on Tatooine (played by newcomer Daisy Ridley).

Nice landspeeder!

And then we meet Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis) as a stressed-out X-wing pilot.

And finally there's this dude. Walking in the dark. In a hooded cloak. With a red lightsaber featuring a hilt. While that same deep, foreboding voice says, "The dark side…" Soooo, villain, right?

There are also some flashes of some intriguing (if kind of random) moments from the film, like this droid bobbling along on a ball.

There's this ship filled with Stormtroopers landing… somewhere.

This trio of X-wing fighters skimming along the water is pretty damn cool. But you know what's cooler?

The Millennium Falcon banking in the sky while John Williams' Star Wars fanfare blasts through the speakers…

…before two TIE fighters scream past it in a firefight over the sands of Tatooine.

Overall, this was a true teaser. There was no sense of the plot, who any of the new characters really are, or how they relate to each other. And, of course, there was no sign of Han, Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, C-3PO, or R2-D2.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on Dec. 18, 2015.
