With unprecedented speed and magnitude, Star Wars: The Force Awakens surpassed Avatar as the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office late Wednesday with an estimated $764.4 million in total grosses, according to Disney.
The Force Awakens already holds multiple box office records, starting with the biggest domestic and global opening weekends of all time, and it has reached every $100 million domestic box office benchmark with unrivaled speed.
In fact, the seventh film in the Star Wars saga reached the all-time domestic box office record in just 20 days; as a point of comparison, it took 47 days for Avatar to surpass 1997's Titanic atop the all-time domestic box office.
When adjusting for ticket price inflation, however, The Force Awakens is currently the 20th highest-grossing film of all time; the 1939 Civil War epic Gone With the Wind still sits comfortably atop the all-time list, with $1.74 billion in adjusted gross.
With the holiday season over, The Force Awakens' domestic box office trajectory has dropped out of light speed, but it still could reach the $1 billion milestone by the end of its run.
Meanwhile, The Force Awakens' international box office, while strong, has not grown at the same velocity as its domestic box office.
Whether the film can eclipse Avatar's $2.03 billion foreign grosses depends on how well it does in China, where it will open on Jan. 9.
